HATTIESBURG, ma’am. – Ole Miss beat Southern Miss 5-0 on Sunday in the second game of the Super Area to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 2014. It will be the rebels’ sixth appearance in Omaha in June.

Hosts Golden Eagles (47-19), who won in the Hattiesburg Area last weekend, have not scored in two games against Ole Miss. The Rebels (37-22) won game one 10-0 on Saturday.

In Sunday’s contest, freshman All-American Hunter Elliott impressed, throwing seven and a third inning with 10 hits and just three hits. He only faced 25 hitters and in one segment of the competition he beat 16 in a row.

In the eighth inning with his team leading 4-0, Elliott dropped a single against Slade Wilks. And after an opening match, Gabe Montenegro won. At that point, Elliot’s great day was over. Josh Mallitz arrives and takes care of the business, but things look a bit shaky for a few moments.

Golden Eagle Reece Ewing walked to load the base with two heads, but Carson Paetow flew out to knock out Peyton Chatagnier, and took no damage. At that time, Ole Miss had three points to go through.

Mallitz finished the game and took three points in the top nine.

The Rebels scored three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead, which they never gave up. A single by Jacob Gonzalez RBI was scored by Calvin Harris, who was achieved in a single. Justin Bench, who scored a brace, then scored after a pass from USM initiator Tanner Hall. Gonzalez scored a single goal from Kevin Graham.

Hayden Dunhurst led the sixth game with a basic hit and then scored in a single Bench. It’s 4-0, and things are about to get interesting in the top eight.

But that’s when Mallitz comes in to get things done for Elliott. Then, late in the eighth round, TJ McCants, who hadn’t played recently due to injury, sent one off the field for late-round coverage for the Rebels.

Elliot improved to 4-3 of the season and Mallitz made his second save.

More information on the Rebel’s trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, will be posted to when available.
