Omicron is less severe than Delta for children under 5 years old

“Omicron is less severe than Delta, however, the severity reduction in clinical outcomes is only 16 to 85 percent,” said researcher Rong Xu from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio. .

“Furthermore, because so many unvaccinated children have been infected, the long-term effects of Covid-19 infection on children’s brains, hearts, immune systems and other organs are still unknown.” well known and worrisome,” added Xu.

For the study, the team analyzed the electronic health records of more than 651,640 children in the United States who had medical meetings with healthcare organizations between September 2021 and January 2022, including including more than 22,772 children infected with Omicron in late December and late January. – more than 66,000 children were infected when Delta disease was common in the fall.

The study also compared the records of more than 10,000 children just before the discovery of Omicron in the US, when Delta was still dominant.

Children under 5 years of age are not yet eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine and have low rates of previous infection with SARS-CoV-2, which also limits their available immunity.

The team examined clinical outcomes for pediatric patients 14 days after infection with SARS-CoV-2. Among the factors they looked at were: emergency room visits, hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and use of mechanical ventilation.

Further analysis of demographic data shows that children infected with Omicron are on average younger – 1.5 years versus 1.7 years – and have fewer comorbidities.
