The world of A piece will come to Netflix as a live-action adaptation of the much-loved manga series. We recently got our first look at some of the series’ expanded cast, along with Concept art and set of show words. From Monkey D.Luffy to Red Hair to Alvida and beyond, the show’s cast looks massive.
So whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering One Piece for the first time, here’s everything you need to know about the Netflix show’s cast and characters.
Netflix’s One Piece Cast
Inaki Godoy as Monkey D.Luffy, which shows a lot of enthusiasm and energy in the behind-the-scenes that Netflix has released. For those new to the series, Luffy’s journey begins after being accidentally turned into a rubber man by ingesting a magic devil fruit, giving him the power to lengthen his body but cursing him. for not being able to swim (a situation we all find ourselves in, I’m sure). He is a powerful warrior, with an insatiable appetite for meat and dreams of one day becoming the Pirate King.
Luffy’s friend and mentor, Red-Haired Shanks, is played by Peter Gadiot of Showtime’s Yellowjackets team. We got a glimpse of his Red Force ship in behind-the-scenes footage. Shanks is a legendary pirate captain, but known to his friends simply as Redhead.
Ilia Isorelys Paulino is playing Luffy’s first true villain, the pirate captain Alvida. In the original manga, she undergoes a dramatic visual change when the crew arrives at Loguetown, the final harbor before the real adventure into the ocean passage known as the Grand Line begins. It will be interesting to see if future episodes will reprise the role or what changes will be made to deviate from the original material. (And we’re just speculating, but it’s possible that the crew’s visit to Loguetown will be skipped entirely in favor of the character Smoker, whose first appearance there, has yet to be announced.)
Alvida’s ship, the Love Duck, can be seen in great detail in behind-the-scenes footage and is likely the setting for at least one of the early episodes. In the manga and anime, Luffy first meets his friend Koby on Love Duck. Koby is played in this series by Morgan Davies. The character didn’t stick around for long in the manga, but played a much larger role in the series later on. Let’s hope the show goes on for a couple of seasons so we can finally see where Koby’s story goes.
The first real member of Luffy’s crew that we meet is the legendary, three-sword pirate hunter Roronoa Zoro, played by Japanese actor Mackenyu. The actor has previously played characters in other hit movies such as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Tokyo Ghoul and Rurouni Kenshin, among many others.
Roronoa Zoro will face Aidan Scott, who is playing the rotten Helmeppo, another character whose role was small at first but whose influence grows in the future. Helmeppo’s father, ax-armed Captain Morgan, is portrayed by Langley Kirkwood in his second comic book role after playing Judge Lex in Dredd in 2012.
