“Only been running for a year, how about you? You guys do something”
Kyrie Irving is expected to opt out of his contract and become a NBA Free agent this summer. When he declines his player selection, he will be eligible to receive a maximum offer for 5 years in the amount of nearly $250 million from brooklyn network.
“Uncle Drew” all confirmed this when he appeared on The ETCs, Kevin Durantpodcast’s. Irving stressed that he is looking to “combine four consecutive years of team dominance.” He’s almost entirely enjoying that while earning the maximum extension he’s eligible to get from the Nets.
Dan Patrick on his podcast was extremely skeptical of Kyrie Irving’s vision of long-term dominance:
“He [Irving] also told Kevin Durant, ‘You know, I could see us dominating for four years.’ Well, that’s a maximum contract expiration time that if you give me a four-year contract and then we’ll have a four-year term. I’m satisfied with Kyrie’s one-year journey right now. Just a year running. How do you play? Guys, do something, bring it all together. Half a year, that’s good enough. ”
Since signing up with the Brooklyn Nets to form a super team with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving has played 20, 54 and 29 games in three seasons. He missed 123 games and played only 103 games for the Nets since the 2019-20 season.
The critical point defender has missed significant time due to injury and controversial vaccine stance. He also left the team without saying anything to Steve Nash or Sean Marks. Kyrie Irving will return a few days later and says he just wants a “pause”.
In two seasons with Kevin Durant, he won only one playoff series, the match against Boston Celtics in the playoffs last year. Boston was without Jaylen Brown in that series and won only one.
The Celtics have returned the favor this season, wiping out Durant and Irving in one of the most disappointing seasons of all time.
Dan Patrick was right. Kyrie Irving didn’t even deliver a year of dominance with the Brooklyn Nets. GM Sean Marks may have a second thought on full max extension due to Irving’s terrible work.
Will the Brooklyn Nets succumb to Kyrie Irving’s expectations of a maximum extension?
Without Kevin Durant, this wouldn’t have been an easy one. The leverage of “Kai” is KD’s friendship. Irving’s performance in the playoffs since leaving LeBron James simply average. Domination is an absolute possibility given that he is only 11-11 years old in the post-season period without “King James”.
In the series against the Boston Celtics, Kyrie Irving only dominated in the 4th half of Game 1 when dropping 18 points. For the rest, he had some good plays but largely disappeared against Boston’s restless defence.
As Shaquille O’Neal suggested about a episode of The Big Podcast, 10-15 stipulations must be part of the Brooklyn Nets maximum contract offer. Among the conditions to be met will be games played, All-Star and All-NBA selections, and NBA Finals appearances.
Shaq’s suggestion might be the best way to go. The Brooklyn Nets couldn’t listen to Irving’s four-year dominance as he showed he could quit at any time.
