Open world game with BotW Vibes, except you are not human
Gecko Gods is an upcoming exploration and puzzle game by Louis Waloschek (and other collaborators) that puts the player in control of a gecko crawling around a vast island. The game received a little bit of interest yesterday when the developer announced that it was coming to the Switch, and it sure looks cute.
For me, what stands out is how, because the gecko can climb walls and ceilings, it opens up new dimensions for you to explore and for the team to design puzzles around. Thus, the entire stone structure in its temples becomes space for level design, and it’s a neat way to think about the environment as you climb around it and solve puzzles.
Gecko Gods There are also rowing segments, and it’s lovely to watch the little gecko trying to steer the boat on its own, as it has to control its mouth while also controlling the engine to start and stop. It’s an interesting design decision that can help you understand the feeling of something inhuman running something made for humans. Hopefully the novelty keeps that from frustrating. The exploration and puzzle-solving parts seem to be broken up by the combat sections, and while our chameleon friend here doesn’t use any weapons in the trailer, it does appear to have a malicious and nimble bites.
The whole thing seems to be clearly inspired by different eras of Legend of Zelda series. The boat ride evokes Awaken the windThe environment and character design seem to be taken from Breath of the Wild, and overall, it seems to be geared towards a sense of mystery and serenity. Color I’m curious.
