When authorities arrived, they said they found a 6-year-old boy with no pulse in the arms of Rhodes Jr.
When the delegates arrived, they said the 6-year-old was not breathing.
They performed CPR until he was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening brain bleed and on life support. He died a few days later from severe trauma.
Police Chief Marcos Lopez warned during a press conference that the details of the incident would be difficult to hear.
He said a total of eight people were staying in a hotel room at Knights Inn: Two parents and six children.
“The kids are isolated in this hotel room,” he said. “They don’t go to school and have no friends.”
Regarding the circumstances that led to the 6-year-old’s death, Lopez said that interviews with other children have revealed what really happened to the boy.
He said investigators were aware that the child was drinking from the toilet, but that was not why he was not breathing when deputies arrived.
“The parents were angry because he was drinking in the toilet, so they started beating him,” he said. “Maybe he’s thirsty, he’s just trying to survive.”
Lopez said both the mother and father then took turns beating the 6-year-old.
He said both father and mother have now been charged with murder.
Lopez said other children living in the hotel were also abused. They were severely malnourished, with cuts and bruises.
Blaise and Rhodes Jr have also been charged with child abuse and their child has been placed in foster care.
One of his most seasoned detectives, Lopez said, who has worked for the department for 19 years, said she has never seen a worse case of child abuse.
