Several witnesses said Israeli forces destroyed Jerusalem-born Abu Akleh.

According to ballistics and forensic experts, the blue-head bullet is designed to penetrate armor and is used in the M4 rifle. The ring was extracted from her head.

The bullet was analyzed using a 3D model and according to experts, it has a 5.56mm caliber – the type used by Israeli forces. The ring is designed and manufactured in the USA, experts say.

Israeli officials initially said that Palestinian militants may have killed Abu Akleh.

However, Israel later backed down and said it could not be ruled out that an Israeli soldier opened fire. Palestinian leaders have rejected the proposal of a joint poll with Israel, saying such a poll would not be transparent.

Al Jazeera Media Network announced on May 26 that it has designate a legal group to refer the murder to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. The case was recently handed over to the ICC prosecutor. However, the current status of the investigation remains unclear.

Attorneys working on a case submitted to the ICC about targeting of Palestinian journalists Israeli forces also said they would add the killing of Abu Akleh.
