Parental changes can contribute to perfectionism
Lead researcher Thomas Curran, PhD, an assistant professor of psychological and behavioral sciences at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The study analyzed more than 20,000 US, Canadian and UK university students. It is seen that Young people’s awareness of their parents’ expectations and criticisms has increased over the past 32 years and is related to their increased perfectionism.
“Parental expectations come at a heavy cost when they are perceived as excessive. Young people internalize those expectations and depend on them for their self-esteem. And when they fail to meet them. they, as they always do, will criticize themselves for not being suitable. To compensate, they strive to be perfect. These tendencies may help explain the growing mental health problems in young people and suggests this problem will only get worse in the future”. Curran said.
Thereby, the study shows that Parents can help their children cope with social pressure in a healthy way Curran speaks by teaching them that failure, or being imperfect, is a normal and natural part of life.
