Prigozhin: ‘Those speculating …’: Video featuring Russia’s Prigozhin fuels rumors he’s alive

NEW DELHI: Days after Yevgeny Prigozhin was presumed dead in a plane crash and buried at a private funeral, the rumours of the Wagner Group boss being alive are still doing the rounds.
A recently released video eerily depicts Prigozhin boasting about surviving assassination attempts — adding to suspicions that the Russian warlord might still be out there somewhere, the New York Post reported.
The video was published on a Telegram channel associated with Prigozhin’s mercenary group on Wednesday, a week after he was reported dead in a plane crash.
“Regarding those speculating about my existence and well-being, let me clarify: it’s the weekend, second half of August 2023, and I’m in Africa,” Prigozhin, 62, can be heard saying in the video presented by the Grey Zone Telegram channel associated with Wagner, the report said.
“So, for those who enjoy deliberating my elimination or personal matters, my earnings, or anything else — everything is fine,” he concludes, nonchalantly waving his hand.
The video was posted without commentary, lacking specific details about its time and location.
Prigozhin’s outfit, matched with a wristwatch, mirrored his August 21 appearance in an Africa video — his first address after a brief June rebellion and final one before his death in a private jet crash two days later, post being labeled a “traitor” by President Vladimir Putin.
Prigozhin’s mention of the “weekend” in the recent clip indicated its likely filming between August 19 and August 20, just days prior to the fatal plane crash on August 23 in the Tver region that claimed his life along with other key Wagner figures and bodyguards.
Though the Grey Zone didn’t imply Prigozhin’s survival, the release’s timing and his comments on evading “liquidation” attempts fueled existing speculations about his continued existence.
One such theory comes from Dr Valery Solovey, a former professor at Moscow State Institute of International Relations, who echoes a widespread belief that Prigozhin wasn’t aboard the crashed jet.
“His body double was on the flight instead. Interestingly, Vladimir Putin is fully aware of this,” the analyst shared in a recent YouTube interview, asserting that the true Wagner leader remains “alive, well, and at liberty.”
The former academic mentioned that Prigozhin intends to “seek revenge” against those who plotted his downfall.
Moreover, in 2019, the Russian warlord was presumed dead after a military aircraft crashed with eight people on boarding Congo. However, he reappeared alive and well only three days later.
Meanwhile, the Russian Investigative Committee, investigating the plane crash, has confirmed Prigozhin’s death through genetic testing, identifying him among the 10 victims.
