An annual report by Cockroach Lab found a dead temperature statistic among the three major cloud providers. Performance evaluation report of AWS, Azure and GCP for typical Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) workloads. Testing shows that all three cloud providers offer top-level performance and price-competitive options for OLTP applications, indicating a shift in the market as the industry matures. and move to standardize linear pricing models.
This year, the report benchmarked 56 instance types and 107 discrete configurations and conducted more than 3,000 runs across the following broad axes, including OLTP performance, CPU performance, network performance, and Performance Storage I/O. Additionally, this year’s report improved the test design configuration for all tests and added testing for different sized instance types; delay between regions; test storage with fsync; complexity of OLTP workloads changes; and throughput test duration is 12 times longer, from 60 seconds per previous test to 12 minutes per test.
The report reveals that AMD beats Intel in overall performance: machines with AMD Milan processors (EPYC Gen 3) won the top spot in both CPU benchmarks and OLTP tests for both session types large and small versions. Over the years, Intel led the pack in terms of overall performance, while AMD competed on price-for-performance metrics. This year, both the overall performance leader and the price-for-performance leader are AMD-based versions.
What’s more, all three clouds have competitive offerings: when it comes to price (and performance), all three are statistically dead heat. Even the slightly more expensive memory and instance combinations are potentially very competitive depending on the requirements of a particular workload.
Finally, storage and transfer costs have a larger impact on total operating costs: the costs of storing and transmitting “hidden” data can have a larger impact on total costs than the prices of the devices themselves. versioning, especially when it comes to building a highly resilient device stateful application.
