Robb Elementary School Fourth Grader Amerie Jo Garza Was Shot as She Called 911, Grandmother Says

“Please don’t wait a second for the obvious,” he wrote. “Hug your family. Tell them you love them. I love you Amerie jo. Take care of your brother for me. ”

Her grandmother, Arreola, said the Texas Rangers informed the family that Amerie Jo had suffered serious injuries and that her body was being sent to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy. She said she was told by authorities and survivors of the shooting:

“So the gunman went in and he said to the kids, ‘You’re going to die.’ And she had her phone and she called 911. And instead of grabbing it and breaking it or taking it from her, he shot her. She was sitting right next to her best friend. Her best friend was covered in blood.”

Arreola said she was told that Amerie Jo had died instantly. She leaves behind a 3-year-old brother, to whom she is attached. Arreola said of her niece, “She’s just a super extrovert. She has a generous heart. She’s always there to help anyone. She very quickly became her pet. She just received her award today for the AB Honor Roll. She is very smart and she is looking forward to making a life for herself.”
