Russia backs India, Brazil for permanent membership in UN Security Council | India News

UN: Russia has voiced support for India and Brazil as ‘worthy candidates’ for permanent UN membership Security Councilcalled them “important international actors”.
During the 77th Session of the UN General AssemblyRussian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday expressed support for India, becoming a permanent member of the Security Council.
In his address to the General Assembly just an hour before Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s speech, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the UN and the Security Council must conform to current realities.
He said that Moscow sees the prospect of making the Security Council more democratic, more exclusive, through the expansion of representation of countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
“We note that India and Brazil in particular are important international members and worthy candidates for permanent membership in the Council, while unilaterally and forced to raise the status of Africa”.
India has been at the forefront of efforts at the UN to push for urgent Security reform Councilstressed that it fully deserves a place at the high-level UN table as a permanent member.
Present, UNSC consisting of 5 permanent member countries and 10 non-permanent member countries approved by the General Assembly of the United Nation.
The five permanent members are Russia, Britain, China, France and the United States, and these countries can veto any substantive solution. There is a growing need for an increase in the number of permanent members to reflect contemporary global realities.
Then, speaking at a news conference at United Nations headquarters on Saturday, he was asked why he only mentioned India and Brazil for permanent membership and not South Africa.
“I would say that we consider India and Brazil to be good candidates because they are the top players in the world, good candidates for permanent membership in the Security Council with conditions at the same time, in the same way, Africa’s profile will be enhanced. ,” said Lavrov.
“I mentioned India and Brazil for one reason only. They have been officially nominated for a long time. For South Africa, the Republic of South Africa, this step has not been taken,” he said, adding that the Members of the African Union are committed to the Ezulwini Consensus.
He added that it is impossible to address the issue of expanding the Security Council without reflecting the interests of Africans. “Once again, I emphasize that we are talking exclusively about expanding the membership of the Security Council with representatives from Asia, Africa and Latin America.
“Because if we had to talk about additions to the Security Council by Western countries, it would be funny for a number of reasons. I will put aside the fact that they are all hostile to the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. ”
He said if political assessments were put aside, any additional Western countries would bring something new to the Security Council.
He said next year, with the addition of Japan to the Council as a non-permanent member, there will be seven countries representing the Western group on the 15-nation Council. He said there is no difference between Japan’s policy and that of the United States.
India is currently in the second half of a two-year term as an elected non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
India’s term on the Council will end in December when it will also chair as President of the powerful United Nations body for the month.
