Russia to try five foreigners for fighting alongside Ukraine
MOSCOW: On Wednesday, Russia announced that a court in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don will try five foreign men, including three British nationals, accused of fighting alongside forces Ukrainian forces against Moscow.
The trial will begin on May 31 on terrorism-related and other charges. The men are expected to face trial in absentia.
Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said three British men, a Swede and a Croatian have been accused of fighting alongside Ukrainian forces – including the Azov regiment, which fought the forces. Russia during the siege of the southern port city of Mariupol.
British people have been identified as John HardingAndrew Hill, and Dylan Healy. Swedish nationality has been named Mathias Gustafsson and Croats like Vjekoslav Prebeg.
They face a number of charges including undergoing training to carry out “terrorist activities”.
All five men are believed to have been freed as part of a prisoner exchange in 2022.
According to Moscow, these men were taken prisoner during the Battle of Mariupol last year.
The Azov Regiment has been listed as a terrorist organization by Russia.
