Savarkar on Rahul’s yatra banner, Congress draws taunts | India News

KOCHI: A photo of Hindu founder Mahasabha Vinayak Damodar Savarkar appeared on a banner at Athani near Kochi for Bharat Jodo Yatra led by MP Wayanad Rahul Gandhi, landing Parliament in a position on Wednesday as it faced taunts on social media assembly and from BJP and CPM for tampering.
Banners featuring freedom fighters were hoisted by a group from the Chengamanad panchayat to mark the 3,500-kilometer Parliament’s unification march from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. Hindutva ideology is placed between the images of Govind Ballabh Pant and Chandra Shekhar Azad.
Congress hastily covered up the mistake and put Mahatma Gandhi’s photo on top of Savarkar’s photo after the banner’s image was posted on social media, sparking anti-party ridicule.
The local Congress leadership blamed a party worker for picking up images of freedom fighters from Google. The party suspended the activities of the National Congress of Trade Unions of India due to indiscretions. MLA Anwar Sadath said party staffers hung the banner themselves.
Parliamentary senior politician Jairam Ramesh told reporters later that the yatra group had nothing to do with the matter, but the BJP was quick to seize the opportunity. “Veer Savarkar’s image adorns the Bharat Jodo Yatra of Congress. Though belated, but well received for Rahul Gandhi,” tweeted Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT department head.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla tweeted: “Looks like every attempt by Rahul to debunk history has been unsuccessful! Veer Savarkar against Rahul who spread lies when his #BharatJodo Yatra We are in Aluva, Ernakulam carries posters of Veer Savarkar,” said Shehzad Poonawalla, BJP spokesman.
