Shallow 6.2-magnitude earthquake jolts Taiwan
TAIPEI: A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has occurred Taiwan‘east coast on Thursday, the island’s weather office said, with a feeling of shaking in the capital Taipei.
The earthquake occurred shortly after noon (0400 Greenwich Mean Time) about 30 kilometers (19 mi) from the coast Hualien District at a shallow depth of six kilometers.
The US Geological Survey reported a lower reading of 5.9 degrees and a depth of 12 km.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes because the island is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates.
Some earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher can be deadly, although much depends on where the quake occurs and at what depth.
An AFP reporter in Taipei said tremors in the capital felt less intense than previous quakes this year.
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit Taiwan’s east coast in September, killing one person and destroying several buildings.
