Side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine on menstruation

Non-menstrual people have reported menstrual symptoms related to the COVID-19 vaccine, according to a survey of 160,000 respondents, at Washington University in St. Louis, presented at American Anatomy Society annual meeting in Experimental Biology (EB) 2022 meeting, in Philadelphia.

Almost one-third of study respondents reported sudden bleeding after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, 9% reported breast or breast tenderness and 46% said they had other symptoms they are commonly associated with menstruation, such as cramping and bloating.

Many non-menstrual persons have reported sudden bleeding or other menstrual symptoms after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, thus emphasizing the ‘vaccine side effect’.

These findings draw attention to the potential physical and mental side effects of vaccinations in people with diverse gender identities such as transgender, non-binary, or transgender.

“It is important to examine the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on menstrual bleeding and breakthrough bleeding in non-women, as they are not often discussed. I hope that this study. will add to the growing body of evidence that we should probably phase out as part of broader vaccine research. Our findings also underscore the importance of including those people are sex-diverse when we study the parts of biology that are so closely related to sex-based reproductive physiology like period,” Katharine Lee, PhD, a postdoctoral research scholar in the department of public health sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, the study’s first author.
