Sony confirms PSVR 2 will not be backward compatible with PSVR 1
While initial impressions of PSVR2 praise many features, as well as the overall quality of the experience, a feature that won’t be available on Sony’s new PS5 exclusive headset is backwards compatibility. The company’s VR titles from the previous generation will still be there.
In most Recent episodes of the official PlayStation podcast, Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president of platform experiences for PlayStation, talked about the standout features and development story of designing and building the new VR headset for PS5. When asked directly if last-gen VR titles will be playable on the new headset, Nishino said that “PSVR games are not compatible with PSVR2 because PSVR2 is designed to deliver a world-class VR experience.” true next generation”.
Nishino highlighted the PSVR2’s enhanced feature set as the obvious reason for this, especially the controllers that are ready for haptic feedback, with adaptive triggers, as well as inside-out tracking and eye tracking, among other controls. “Developing games for PSVR2,” says Nishino, “requires a completely different approach than the original PSVR.”
Honestly, I would struggle to name even half a dozen memorable titles on the original PSVR. But there’s no denying that this is kind of silly, especially since these games can be known for being available for a limited time only on such specific hardware. While it seems that the larger titles, such as Resident Evil 7will be fully supported PSVR2, games like Robinson: The Journey or Golem risk losing time if they don’t appear on other VR platforms.
If you have followed with backwards compatibility story on the PlayStation platform, which Xbox has distributed so thoroughly, this probably won’t surprise you. Hopefully those forgotten PSVR classics, whatever they really are, find a way out of the island of Sony’s false experiments.
