Texas Technology scored big on the recruiting road on Thursday with commitment from Mansfield (Texas) four-star defensive back Timberview Jordan Sanford.
For Sanford, it’s his faith in the newly hired head coach Joey McGuire which led to him deciding to head West to Lubbock for the next 3-4 years.
“Maybe it’s just the relationships that I’ve built there and I just think it’s really family-oriented,” Sanford said. “Definitely hearing about manager McGuire and the opportunities after football. “
Like most players and coaches in Texas high school football, Sanford had known about whom Joey McGuire was about to be recruited by Texas Tech, but witnessing it firsthand made everything all right. .
“Everything I heard about him was good,” he said. “When he first arrived, I was nervous because he was a new coach who had never coached a college team as head coach before. But just hearing all the good things about him, I just think things off the field will bring him. “
During an official visit to Lubbock, Sanford noticed the team’s momentum and could see the vision under the new regime.
“They’re really goal-oriented, they know what they want,” he said. “They wake up every day with a vision of how to get there, and I think I fit in with that.”
In addition to Texas Tech, Sanford’s official visit in June saw him make trips to Northwest, Oklahoma State, SMU and Washington. Despite the noise outside, Sanford believes Tech is the right place for him.
“It was a difficult decision,” Sanford said. “That’s probably why I played my recruiting the way it was. Just trying to make the best decision for me and what I think will help me after football.”
Background of the Red Raiders phụ sub-coach and passing game coordinator Marcel Yates stood out for Sanford, as he saw an opportunity to see the pitch early and developed rapidly under his guidance.
“In terms of development, he used to be DC so I would say he’s qualified to be a sub-coach,” Sanford said. “I trust him to mold me into what I want to be. I checked the depth chart a lot. I think I can definitely play there soon.”
At 5 foot-11, 185 pounds, Sanford is the 18th ranked safety team in the country and the 48th player from Texas state for the 2023 division, according to Rivals. He joins Texas Tech’s top 20 class as its fourth four-star lead.
