The annual patriotic tradition returned to the Boston Common on Wednesday. For the 13th year, volunteers placed more than 37,000 flags on the lawn ahead of Memorial Day to honor fallen heroes from Massachusetts from the American Revolution to the present day. On Thursday, the completed chess garden will serve as the setting for a Memorial Day ceremony. The final 388 flags in display will be placed during the ceremony, representing service members killed since September 11. The annual Chess Garden returns to full size in 2021, after being reduced in size. in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
