The man who assaulted Dave Chappelle on stage at the Comedy Festival – The Hollywood Reporter
Comedian Dave Chappelle was assaulted onstage during his setting at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night, according to show attendees and footage that went viral on social media.
Several event attendees posted video of the incident on Tuesday night, which appeared to show Chappelle performing on stage when a man on the right lunged at him to try to handle him. .
The man was then dragged away by security.
In the video footage, Chappelle is seen recovering calmly and jokingly, “That’s a transgender man.” This joke alludes to the ongoing controversy surrounding some of the comedian’s jokes on his Netflix special that have been interpreted as transverse.
Later, in the closing call video, Chappelle elaborated on the incident and thanked actor and comedian Jamie Foxx. “Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx puts on a sheriff’s hat,” Chappelle said.
“N——, I think it’s part of the show, I don’t know what…” Foxx replied.
Chappelle then said, “I grabbed the back of that n—— head. His hair is so fluffy. Absorb “
Foxx then spends some time talking to the crowd and Chappelle. “Listen, I just wanted to say, this man is an absolute genius. We have to make sure we protect him at all times,” Foxx said.
He added, “For every comedian who comes out here, this means everything. You are a genius. You’re a legend, I’ve enjoyed myself and we won’t let anything happen to you. “
Chappelle later joked to Foxx, “I’ve been doing this for 35 years. I just stomped my foot ——— backstage. I’ve always wanted to do that. ”
Chappelle performed as part of Netflix Is A Joke Fest, a comedy festival in Los Angeles hosted by television giant Netflix.
The Hollywood Reporter have reached out to representatives for Chappelle and Netflix for comment.
The Chappelle attack is likely to fuel anxiety in the comedy community about audiences rushing onto the stage and attacking comedians. The issue was highlighted after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars last month.
One CHEAP reported the aftermath of the slap, suggesting that comedy clubs are considering adding security guards, pre-show warnings and even metal detectors to performances.
