The ‘Thanus’ theory from Endgame inspired The Boys’ latest gore game

These days, starring in superhero movies and TV is inevitable. Prime Video’s Boys has definitely been a trendsetter since its launch in 2019, followed by other recent examples like James Gunn’s Suicide Squad and People of Peacecartoon series Invincibleand by Sam Raimi Doctor Strange in Madness’s Multiverse, Each offers their own version of blood and guts in a superhero story.

The third season of Boyspremiered with the first three episodes on Prime Video Friday, taking this to the next level with an expansive and hugely X-rated joke featuring an Ant-Man-style character named Termite.

[Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for The Boys season 3 episode 1.]

In the first episode of the new season, Frenchie (Tomer Kapon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) are on the hunt for a superhero named Termite. He can be scaled down to an extremely small size, much like Marvel’s Ant-Man.

When we met Termite, he was the life of the party – all the guests were watching him simulate sex with a doll in a dollhouse. Soon after, he retreats to a private room with a romantic partner. The pair snorted cocaine at each other, and then, at the request, Termite shrank and jumped onto his romantic partner’s penis, like a gyro entering a giant cave. Once inside, he playfully touches the walls of this “cave” to stimulate his mates.

Unfortunately, Termite (who, it must be repeated, did ton cocaine) sneezes while inside the penis, inadvertently returning to human size and exploding his partner’s lower half in the process. In a show with a lot of “They did What??!?! “gags, it’s a standout in the sex and intestines department.

How many gag inspirations does the MCU’s Ant-Man have? Muchincluding “butthole theory“About Ant-Man fighting Thanos. After talking about superheroes they haven’t yet parodied, the show’s writers room decided on Ant-Man.

“At a time when there’s a similar meme, why didn’t Ant-Man lift Thanos’ ass and blow him up, right?” showrunner Eric Kripke told Polygon. “And so we said, Well, give the audience that, because we can give them what they want. But Marvel couldn’t, simply couldn’t, for them. And then hilariously, one of the writers […] raise their hands and say, Did we do a butt explosion in season 1? And it’s true, we did. And so, you know, once you get your ass off the table, there’s really just a lot of holes, you know, a guy can get in. “

The scene includes Termite jumping on the giant penis (in his view, at least), and also a shot of him inside it. And yes, the huge penis is a practical effect. Boys the team actually built that.

“My favorite little fact about that scene is that, although the visual effects made it sweet, it was an actual penis,” says Kripke. “11 feet tall and 20 feet long, built at great expense. So when he jumped in that hole, it was a real thing that was happening. And it showcases 7,030 reasons why I love this job. ”

Kripke admits the tendency toward gore is also something he sees in the superhero genre, but isn’t willing to attribute the change to mere Boys.

“There is certainly a tendency to deconstruct the superhero genre,” said Kripke. “But I think in the end, it’s inevitable when you have such a large cultural force. Like remember the comics trend of how long you’ve had very relatable superhero works? And then you have like Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman and Garth Ennis, The British Invasion, who created Boys, and then they deconstruct and tear it apart, but rebuild it and pay homage to it and just start playing with the form? I think you’re seeing the same thing happen on television. So I don’t know if anyone is being inspired by anyone else. Just a smell in the air. ”

The first three episodes of season 3 of Boys now available on Prime Video.
