[The following story contains spoilers for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s “The People vs. Emil Blonsky.”]
Tim Roth last appeared as Emil Blonsky / Abomination in the second Marvel Studios feature film, The Incredible Hulk (2008), and now, after another 27 movies and seven TV series, he’s back in the MCU’s eighth series, She-Hulk: Lawyer.
In “The People vs. Emil Blonsky,” written by Francesca Gailes and Jacqueline Gailes and directed by Kat Coiro, Blonsky is about to be pardoned, seems to have turned a new leaf, and so he asks Jen Walters/She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) ) to protect him even though she’s the cousin of his old nemesis, Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). It took a lot of work, but Jen eventually convinced the parole board to release Blonsky under certain conditions. However, the question remains as to whether Blonsky can be trusted.
“He is in a maximum security facility. He is isolated in the bubble. He is left to think. He is left to plan. And when you see him again, will you trust him? ” Roth told The Hollywood Reporter. “But shall we see, or shall we? He is an intelligent man. Sure.”
Since very few elements were carried over from Louis Leterrier’s Extraordinary Hulk, it’s fair to wonder if Edward Norton’s Bruce Banner/Hulk replay of the original MCU affects Roth’s chances of an earlier return. And while the British actor never gave much thought to the subject, he has always admired Mark Ruffalo, who took over from Norton in 2012. The Avengers.
In fact, the two actors actually worked together She is heavy and even admit reoccurrence, in a deleted scene or a scene from an upcoming episode. (Roth seems to lean more towards it being a deleted scene, but he’s not entirely sure because he hasn’t seen the show.)
“I have always wanted to work with [Mark Ruffalo], and it just happened like this, which is fun. But we were confused with [the recasting],” shared Roth. “I don’t know if any of them have become [She-Hulk], but when I look at him while we’re filming, I’m like, ‘You’ve gained weight. There’s something about you… ‘So it’s kind of stuff. We messed up and we were encouraged to improvise and play. So we handled [the recasting]. ”
In a recent conversation with CHEAPRoth also discussed being cut from Quentin Tarantino’s Once upon a time in Hollywoodas well as his interest in seeing an extended cut.
So the chance to come back She is heavy and Shang-Chi come out of the left field? Do you expect it from afar?
Not completely not. It made me laugh, to be honest. I can’t remember the order it came in, but they asked me if I could come in and do some dub work. They put the Abomination in Shang-Chi, which I have never seen. So I don’t know anything about it, but they said, “Can you come over and do a little bit of the voiceover work?” And I just thought, “Yeah, okay.” And then they said come in and see Kevin [Feige] because he has an idea. So I met Kevin and Wendy [Jacobson] at Marvel, and they said, “This is what we want to do. Let us know what you think.” And I just laughed at how amusing it was.
I did [The Incredible Hulk] for my children. That’s why I did it. “Dad is a monster.” They love comic books. They love the Hulk, and I grew up on the Hulk. So I was there in a Hulk movie, and the chance to embarrass your kids at school is always good. The valve is multi-active. So I did it, and then I moved on. But I remember talking to Kevin Feige and Stan Lee on set about what happened to Blonsky, and their idea was that he was in a steel bunker, sealed and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. So he will have time to think. But that’s what we’ll talk about as we get ready for work.
And in a way, that’s what they did. He is in a maximum security facility. He is isolated in a bubble. He is left to think. He is left to plan. And when you see him again, will you trust him? And who came to his rescue? She is heavy. So that’s where the journey begins, and I thought it would be interesting to revisit my children’s childhood. You also have to deal with the problem in some way, so hopefully we’ve done that. I have never seen it.
Because your character is so tied to Edward Norton’s version of Bruce Banner, is there a part of you that thinks you won’t come back for that association and reprise it later?
No, I never thought deeply about that. I remember when they changed actors, and I remember enjoying what Mark [Ruffalo] do. I am a fan of Mark as an actor. He’s just an incredible guy and an incredible actor. I’ve always wanted to work with him, and it just happened to happen, it was fun. But we were confused with [the recasting]. I don’t know if any of them have made it [She-Hulk], but when I looked at him while we were filming, I was like, “You’ve gained weight. There’s something about you…” So it’s kind of stuff. We messed up and we were encouraged to improvise and play. So we handled [the recasting].
But in general, [recasting] never really crossed my mind. I guess I don’t think so. Anyway, I don’t think franchises existed at the time. All of that came later along with what Robert Downey Jr. and those people have achieved through humour. That breaks all the walls, and they go. It is quite extraordinary.
So has Blonsky really been restored? Is that the power of having seven wives?
(Laugh.) Obviously so, yes! But shall we see, or shall we? I don’t know what you saw, but he had a lot of time to think. He is an intelligent man. Sure.

Your characters tend to sit in unconventional ways, whether it’s putting your arm in the back of a booth like Freddy Newandyke/Mr. Orange inside Reservoir dog or put one foot on the booth seat like Pumpkin in Pulp Fiction or lounging on a chair like Blonsky. Am I doing something here? Are you actively making these choices?
It was certainly commented in school, in English: “Sit up straight! What’s wrong with you!?” That’s one way of thinking. But Blonsky would definitely do it, right? It’s interesting to see him play with people, so I think it might just be my way, but it depends a lot on the character, and it seems to belong in the Blonsky world.
So Quentin Tarantino released The Hateful Eight: Extended Edition on Netflix and there was discussion about doing something similar for Once upon a time in Hollywoodbe it a three hour and twenty minute cut or a skit format like The hateful number eight.
Wonderful! I do not know that.
I’ll ask you if you’ve heard anything regarding prolonged cuts Hollywoodbut it all looks like news to you.
I didn’t even know that he made an extended version of The Hateful Eight. When we did Once upon a time in Hollywood, it was just a cameo. I went and did a few scenes. He was very sweet about it when we talked, but the cut that was given was four hours long or something. So he had to make decisions about which characters he had to pursue, and so the other characters’ plots, unfortunately, went the other way. All of those storylines have been filmed, so it will be an interesting thing to watch. My son [Hunter Roth], who did this job as an assistant, went to the movie screening in Arclight, and he said, “You’ve got the bill!” It made him burst because it said, “Tim Roth (Cut).” (Laugh.) And that’s Quentin. I really like that. So if he did an extended version, that would be pretty weird and awesome. It will be something to see.
Are Quentin’s return offers as satisfying as any acting reviews or awards?
Basically, we all have Quentin in our phones, and if it lights up, everyone picks up the call and says, “OK!” It was a fun, unique experience working with him. It’s not like anything. I’ve been there from the beginning, and the man hasn’t changed. His ability to communicate ideas changed because he was free to go and play. So as a spectator, we enjoy what he gives us. As an actor, you hope you’ll be on that journey again with him. Once is never enough. It’s just a hell of a ride.
