Tory Burch, Julianne Moore and Mindy Kaling Talk Female Ambition
There is no doubt that during the past two years of the pandemic, we have transformed our relationship into ambition. Back in February, the New York Times dubbed the “Age Against Ambition,” describes a culture in which “the main emotion a job arouses right now is determination to endure”. Some children, Senior athletes openly choose to take a step back from their careers to prioritize their mental health and well-being. Millions of people were forced and choose leave their jobs; even ours aesthetic choice considered as events for a society that are lit on fire and then burned down.
But such a gloomy scene (hopefully) can’t last forever. And on Tuesday, at the Tory Burch Foundation’s third Embrace Ambition summit, it was nowhere to be found. At this year’s summit, focused on confronting stereotypes and creating new standards, panel after panel brought forth the passions and expertise of them to illustrate another type — boldly speaking, one ambitious — of the future.
The organization of the same name, Tory Burch, kicked off the day-long summit, held at the Jazz Center in Lincoln and also streamingtalk to a large crowd, including some Tory Burch Foundation Business Fellows. The designer and philanthropist asked the audience to close their eyes and imagine a world where all women could embrace their ambitions. “I see a world where women are free to make the choices that are right for them and not be penalized for those choices.” she speaks, perhaps referring to the current battle for abortion rights across the country. “I see a world where more and more men are real allies in the work around women’s issues. I see a world where more policies take into account the needs of women and their families. And I see a world where women, 50% of entrepreneurs, get no less than three percent of venture capital, they get 50… I see a world where no women are asked, Like I was, are you ambitious? As if it were a negative. And I see a world where women’s equality is a grant, not a favor. And what do you see? If you like the world you see better than the world we live in, I have only one thing to say: Embrace our ambition, and let’s build it together.”

Since then, the day’s program has featured leaders from a variety of fields, including business, literature, prison reform, medicine, sports, gun violence prevention, justice reproduction, science and music. In an empowering gun control panel, actress Julianne Moore encourages participants to speak out about gun safety in their communities and with their elected officials. When Burch asked Moore if she’d received backlash for being such an outspoken advocate, Moore said, “I haven’t, and I think that’s really important. I receive nothing but gratitude. ” She continued, “It’s not dangerous [to speak about this]. Most people believe in conventional gun laws, right? Most people want this. It is important for us to make ourselves known.”

Dolores Huerta, iconic labor organizer, and president and founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, echoed similar sentiments during a moving conversation between her and actor and activist Rosie Perez . “Right now, our democracy is in crisis and we are the only ones who can save it,” Huerta said, urging people to vote for those who will “fight for us.” Then, before leading everyone to read her famous slogan, “sí se puede” or “yes we can,” she continued: “We must all be messengers of peace. We must all become organizers… We cannot take democracy for granted. It is a sport involving everyone. If we don’t participate, then we lose it.”

Speakers also touched on how, at a granular level, we can make room for more women in power. In a recorded video For the summit, Hollywood multi-hyphen Mindy Kaling shared how her perspective has changed after years of working in television. “When I first started my business, all I wanted to do was keep the job and be able to write for TV,” she says. “My parents, as immigrants, were like ‘If you get a job, if you’re lucky enough to get this job, keep your head down, become invisible, and just serve. ‘ But the flip side of that, of course, it’s like, ‘don’t think you’re Indian, that you’re a woman, don’t be political and talk about it all the time.’ I really keep that in mind, the kind of erasing myself to be a good worker. So what I’ve been struggling with since that advice is the advice that got me started Officeit helped me succeed at Office. But… when I’m the only woman and the only person of color, you’re like, ‘Wow, I’ve made it,’ and you’re put into this system that makes you feel like, ‘I don’t want to. still, because I will be replaced or I will be less special. ‘ It wasn’t until I felt that I was truly confident and secure in my work that I could see it more clearly, it wouldn’t be a struggle to tell the stories. that I care about. if more us. “

The day’s sessions ended when Burch took to the stage with tennis champion and activist Billie Jean King, who spoke about her fight for women and men to get paid same bonus at the world’s major tennis tournaments. “It’s not just about the money, it’s about the message,” says King. “I hope it makes people more ambitious.” The two also announced — before hitting a bucket of autographed tennis balls into the audience — that Tory Burch would be the official standout player of the Billie Jean King Cup, the world cup of women’s tennis. “We have an opportunity to have a global impact on these women and so many young people watching,” King said of the tournament. “It’s a way to change the culture, to change people’s hearts and minds, to think that equality is important, that they can make that happen.”
