UAAP Basketball: UP rally to overthrow La Salle, face Ateneo in final

MANILA, Philippines — Rookie hitter Carl Tamayo scored 12 of his 18 points in the final three minutes to lift the University of the Philippines to a 78-74 win from behind over La Salle on Friday night, securing the top spot. Fighting Maroons in the UAAP Season 84 Men’s Basketball Championship.
The 6-foot-7 Tamayo was silent for much of the game as UP struggled, leading the Maroons’ revolt from 71-61 with less than four minutes remaining in the game.
UP will therefore face Ateneo in the best of finals starting on Sunday, keeping the psychological advantage of being the first team to deal with the Blue Eagles’ first defeat in three years.
Harold Alarcon hit the three-pointer mark and then Tamayo began accumulating points, ending the game at 73 with a Joel Cagulangan steal in the final 1:36.
La Salle’s hardworking forward Mike Phillips made it 74-73 but Tamayo overcame any fouls from reckless defenders. Tamayo converted all four charities to complete a comeback that didn’t come true in their first Finals last Wednesday.
