Uganda declares first Ebola death since 2019: Health ministry

KAMPALA: Uganda’s Ministry of Health on Tuesday announced the country’s first death from the highly contagious Ebola virus since 2019, while also declaring an outbreak in the central Mubende district.
“The confirmed case is a 24-year-old male … (who) showed EVD symptoms and subsequently recovered,” the ministry said on Twitter, using the abbreviation for Ebola virus disease.
In a statement released earlier on Tuesday, World Health Organization said a 24-year-old man from Mubende had tested positive for a “relatively rare Sudanese strain” of the virus.
“This after an investigation by National Rapid Response The WHO says six suspicious deaths have occurred in the county this month.
Eight other suspected patients are being treated, the WHO said.
“This is the first time in more than a decade that Uganda has recorded the Sudan Ebola strain,” WHO Africa Manager Matshidiso Moeti speak.
“We are working closely with national health authorities to investigate the origins of this outbreak and support efforts to quickly put in place effective control measures.”
Uganda – which shares a porous border with the Democratic Republic of Congo – has experienced several Ebola outbreaks in the past, most recently in 2019, when at least five people died.
The DRC last month recorded a new case in their violent east, less than six weeks after the outbreak in the northwest of the country was declared over.
Ebola is a viral hemorrhagic fever that is often fatal.
First identified in 1976 in the DRC (then Zaire), the virus whose natural host is bats has since caused a series of epidemics in Africa, killing about 15,000 people.
Human transmission is through bodily fluids, with the main symptoms being fever, vomiting, bleeding, and diarrhea.
The worst epidemic in West Africa from 2013 to 2016 killed more than 11,300 people. The DRC has had more than a dozen outbreaks, the deadliest of which killed 2,280 people in 2020.
