UK royals in new race row as William and Kate head to US

LONDON: A senior member of the royal family resigned on Wednesday for repeatedly asking a black British charity campaigner where she “really” came from, plunging Buckingham Palace into a frenzy. new controversy over racial discrimination.
Controversy broke out like Prince William and his wife Kate made his first visit in 8 years to the United States, where his estranged brother Prince Harry and his multiracial wife Meghan direct.
Susan Hussey, 83, Prince William’s godmother, was named by the British media as the woman in question who has stepped down from the role of courtier to Queen Consort Camilla.
Ngo Tu Phuc LanThe chief executive of London-based group Sistah Space, recounted the exchange on Twitter, calling her only “Lady SH”.
Fulani is a prominent advocate for domestic violence survivors, and attended the palace reception with other campaigners on Tuesday.
After saying that she was born and raised in England and is British, Fulani said “Lady SH” asked her: “Where are you really from, where are your people from?”
She was then asked, “When did you first come here?”
Fulani reiterated that she was a British citizen born in the United Kingdom and was forced to say that she was “of African origin, of Caribbean origin”.
The exchange, she said, left her with “mixed feelings” about a reception organized by Camilla to highlight the issue of violence against women and girls.
Buckingham Palace said it took the incident “extremely seriously” and called the comments “unacceptable and deeply regrettable”.
“We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani regarding this matter and have invited her to discuss all elements of her experience directly if she wishes,” a statement read.
“In the meantime, the individual concerned wishes to express his deep apology for the harm caused and has immediately renounced his honorable role.
“All members of the Household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusion policies they must uphold at all times.”
Hussey was a long-serving “madam” to Queen Elizabeth II, and has been described as one of the late monarch’s most trusted aides.
Camilla has relinquished the official role of ladies in the wait, but Hussey, her late husband and former BBC president, is retained by Charles as a royal servant.
– Rivalry on the East Coast – The threat to the clouds William and Kate’s three-day visit to Boston, where Charles’ heiress will present the Earthshot Prize for initiatives addressing climate change.
Last year, William insisted “we are not a racist family”, after Harry and Meghan alleged that an unidentified royal asked what color their child would be.
Since then, William has praised the “great contribution” of the “Windrush” generation of Caribbean migrants who helped rebuild Britain after World War II.
Despite arriving legally, many were subsequently wrongly detained and even deported under the Conservative government’s tough immigration policies.
When William and Kate visit Boston, Harry and Meghan will head to New York for another awards ceremony, although the two hostile brothers are said to have no plans to meet.
Harry and Meghan gave up royal life in early 2020 and moved to California, garnering many fans among young people and in the black community for their take on the British establishment.
Despite this, the UK media have repeatedly accused them of exaggerating their unfortunate circumstances as members of the royal family but the couple can point to the latest allegations such as a proof.
Earlier this year, the palace was accused of turning a blind eye to calls from Caribbean nations that still have Charles as head of state to acknowledge Britain’s past role of slavery.
William and Kate’s visit to Jamaica was also criticized for lashing out at colonialism.
Women’s Equality Party leader Mandu Reid, who witnessed Tuesday’s exchange, called it “serious” and more like an “interrogation”.
She said it felt as if they were “not being treated as if we belonged” or “as if we were British”.
