MUMBAI: Impressed with his raw speed, former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar feel rookie pacer Umran Malik should board a flight to Australia for this year World Cup T20.
“I hope so because he (Umran) is a very interesting talent. He did well in the IPL and he deserves a chance because he looks the best pitcher in the sport. I hope he’s on the plane and I’m sure he’ll do well if given the chance,” Vengsarkar told reporters here on Saturday.
The T20 World Cup will be held in Australia from October to November later this year.
“He (Umran) is young and really wants to leave. You have to give a chance to someone who is in good form. He is young, playful and hungry for success,” said the former national selection president. more.
Umran has won 22 free kicks in 14 games for Sunrisers Hyderabad at this year’s IPL but his ability to score consistently at 95 mph has been beyond everyone’s imagination.
He was then rewarded for his consistency when he earned his first national call-up for the T20 series against South Africa but did not get to play.
He has also been selected for the T20 series against Ireland, which begins on Sunday and it remains to be seen whether he will make his India debut.
Vengsarkar’s 1983 World Cup winning teammate and former all-rounder from India, Roger Binny also felt that Umran should be given immediate opportunities in all three formats.
“There’s definitely going to be a bunch of faster pitchers coming in right now. And he (Umran) should be given a chance right away because he’s proven that he’s quick and if you seeing him beat some yorkers in the IPL that’s what Binny said.
“Well, I’m not surprised that someone came to the scene (and bowling over 150 km/h), because we have a lot of people (bowling) around the 140-142 area for the last six or seven years and especially is in IPL. I’m not surprised (by Umran’s sheer speed).”
The duo were speaking on the sidelines of the book launch ‘The World Cup 1983 Opus’, alongside Paymentz.

Vengsarkar, who picked Virat Kohli for the first time in the national team, assisted the former captain, who had suffered for a long time, to perform well against England.
“I’m sure because he (Kohli) is a world-class player. He played well and was very fit. He didn’t score in the T20s but I think he will come back strong, especially in the UK test. He and Rohit Sharma“I expect big races in the UK,” Vengsarkar said.
Vengsarkar also praised Hardik Pandya for his strong comeback.
“The way he (Hardik) came back from injury is very good. He must have worked very hard physically. He did very well in the IPL and as a captain, he is. did a great job. (He’s a) very good.”
“He led from the front. He guided the team in his first major tournament as captain (of the Gujarat Titans). An all-round player that plays a vital role in any team. which,” he said.
