UN biodiversity summit moved from China over Covid-19 policy
BEIJING: A United Nation biodiversity summit to be held in Canada Instead of China, organizers announced Tuesday, the second major international event will be moved from China because of the country’s strict anti-coronavirus policies.
China’s Ministry of Environment said the meeting will be held in December in Montreal, where the secretariat for the summit is located. The ministry said in a statement that the decision was made “after a comprehensive review of the pandemic situation at home and abroad.”
Last month, China withdrew as the host of the 2023 Asian Cup. It also indefinitely postponed the 2022 Asian Games, a sports competition scheduled for September in the city of Hangzhou. Chau.
The country has followed a strict “do not live” policy, restricting international visitors and repeatedly locking down parts or all of cities to quell any outbreaks. The approach is increasingly contrasting with other major countries that have relaxed restrictions and moved towards living with the disease.
The biodiversity summit is similar to the more widely known UN climate summit. The countries that have joined the global agreement for the conservation of the world’s flora and fauna meet regularly to try to achieve the goals set out in the treaty.
The environment ministry said China will continue to hold the role of chairman of the upcoming summit and that the theme and symbolism will remain unchanged.
Beijing, the capital of China, hosted the Winter Olympics in February by creating a bubble that isolated the participants from the general population in China.
