VNL: China overtakes Belgium after 19 points from Gong Xiangyu

MANILA, Philippines – Gong Xiangyu scored 19 points as China beat Belgium, 25-19, 25-22, 25-14, to kick off the National Volleyball League’s (VNL) Week 2 campaign in one match. Lively on Wednesdays at the Smart Araneta Coliseum .
Gong dropped 10 of her 19 points in the second set, where they denied Belgium’s brave fight en route to a quick victory in an hour and 15 minutes.
As Belgium finished the second set 22-all, Jin Ye gave the Chinese the lead before Gong fired back shots to take the advantage in two sets.
The 25-year-old opposite, a 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic gold medalist, scored 16-23 and made three saves as China pulled back after a five-set loss to Thailand in Ankara, Turkey. Period in Week 1.
Li Yingying got 9 points, while Jin and Wang Yuanyuan each added 8 points.
Belgium captains Celine Van Gestel and Pauline Martin lead their team with 11 points, losing just fourth in five games each.
Belgium skipped 18 fouls and had no blocks as China scored 10 kills and committed just 9 fouls.
