Even though I’m only 24 years old, to be honest, there’s very little reason for me to leave my apartment after 10 p.m. on a work night. Lover? Sure is not. A slice of New York City pizza? Probably. Madonna’s Secret Performance for Pride Month? Come on, sign me up!
So when a colleague visited my DM and offered me a ticket on her behalf, I really couldn’t say no. At that moment, I put on my best club-approved black t-shirt, put on a pair of patterned pants, grab my roommate, and head to Terminal 5, the perfect spot in Midtown Manhattan to enjoy NYC Pride Week.
And boy, is it delivered. Madonna, along with a group of drag queens, gay artists and dancers, gave a much-anticipated performance at the World of Women NFT event. Titled “Last Enough Love” in honor of the star’s 2022 dance remix album, Madge sure knows how to throw gay old-school shadows. Sponsored by Belvedere Vodka, RuPaul’s Drag Race outstanding Bob the Drag Queen winner, co-star and team winner Violet Chachki performed a spicy burlesque dance sequence and show co-star Laganja Estranja made the point that she would most likely win crown in an All Stars season (please come back, I beg you). The Queen of Pop was also joined by Dominican rapper Tokischa (with whom she later shared a passionate kiss, more later…), Saucy Santana and Pixie Aventura, rounding out a list Grade A books dressed for the gods.
During the night, it is easy to be mesmerized by the outside world. A giant disco ball hangs from the crowd, Madonna’s face can be found on every open wall and the crowd wears…basically anything they can find to show off. self. As LGBTQ+ rights continue to come under attack across the country and beyond, this environment is like a haven, a place to celebrate love and revel in your best friends while carrying “Vogue” at the top of your lungs.
Appearing around 12 a.m. after a mind-bending performance from the drag queens, Madonna teamed up with Tokischa and Pixie Aventura for the first time on stage to perform Tokischa’s “Linda” remix and hit ” Hung Up” her own. The beats are changed when Madonna and Tokischa are, well, switched. The two then re-enacted one of the most iconic MTV Video Music Awards moments ever, which was Britney Spears and Madonna (and Christina Aguilera) in 2003. “It was a job. It’s hard, but someone has to do it,” Madonna said. Pat. “I put on too much lipstick.”
Madonna then spoke to the crowd, dropping the iconic single-layer platters faster than she dropped the blows. Some highlights:
“I arrived on time, and you were late. What’s up? Did you have a better party to go to? So why are you late? Cricket. “
“This is the city where I was born. I came out of my mother’s vagina in Bay City, Michigan, but I was born in New York City. “
“In case you don’t know, one of the reasons that New York is so great is that I’m pretty sure the first peculiar humans evolved from this city. I think they come from the caves in Central Park West.”
“If you can get here, you’re probably weird.”
“There is one more reason why New York City is the best city in the world. We have the best pizza. Give it up for the New York pizza. “
After the crowd took to the streets for a grand New York pizza (most with a Madonna-themed cocktail in hand), Bob the Drag Queen performed again, and Saucy Santana stepped out and sang a song. remixed version and based on his song “Material Gworl” featuring Madonna, who wore a custom Versace suit—a nod to the back-up dancers in the “Material Girl” music video. her own. The show culminated with a performance of “Celebration,” which featured the entire talented cast. (TBH, I’m still recovering.)
After the show, many people continued to dance as the DJs mixed Madonna’s songs with miscellaneous beats. Others took commemorative photos, and many happily left the venue with a bag of goodies in hand, followed by free pizza and Big Gay Ice Cream right outside the door of the venue.
Earlier in the night, Bob the Drag Queen had said, “When you’re a weirdo, you never have to justify your damn love.” And in that Madonna-filled space, no one has to justify anything, whether it’s DFMO (disco makeup) or something else, because there is “Finally Loved Enough”.
