A woman has been arrested by Punjab police for allegedly throwing her 8-year-old son into a canal near the village of Uchi Bassi in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district after repeatedly arguing with her husband over money issues, an official said. senior officials said Wednesday.
Police arrested the boy’s mother, Vadhaiyan village Reena Kumari, on Tuesday and charged her under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Inspector Bikramjit Singh, Station Officer of Dasuya Police Department, said Reena Kumari married Ravi Kumar in 2012 and has a 10-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son. Her husband went to the Maldives this year to earn a living.
“She used to argue over the phone with her husband and threatened to throw her children into the canal if she didn’t send money. Even on the evening of December 25, Reena Kumari also argued over the phone with her husband for the same reason.
“Yesterday, Raj Kumar, Reena’s brother-in-law, Kumari, learned that she took her son Abhi to the Uchi Bassi channel. Raj Kumar along with his father went looking for both mother and son.
“As they approached the Uchi Bassi canal bridge, they learned from passersby that a woman and a child were sitting on the bank of the canal near Lamina village.
“When both father and son reached the aforementioned location, Reena Kumari is said to have thrown her son into the canal and then fled there,” the police official said.
She was then arrested by the police.
Police said the boy may have drowned in the canal and are trying to find him.
Furthermore, the investigation into the incident is underway, said Inspector Singh.
