World Cup 2022: Hosts Qatar out of tournament after Netherlands draw with Ecuador | World News

Qatar is out of the World Cup – the first time a host country has been eliminated after just two games.

The Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Ecuador on Friday was enough to decide the fate of the Middle Eastern nation after the hosts lost 3-1 to Senegal earlier in the day.

Last Sunday, Qatar was beaten 2-0 by Ecuador in the opening match of the tournament, when they were on 0 points and a goal difference of -4.

Qatar still has to play its third match on Tuesday, against the Netherlands.

But even if the home team wins that clash, they still have only 3 points and cannot finish Group A with second place.

Only the winner and runner-up in each group advance to the round of 16 of the competition.

The Netherlands and Ecuador currently have 4 points together.

Senegal, the defending African champions, is currently third with three points and could theoretically continue if they beat Ecuador on Tuesday.

At Khalifa Stadium, the Dutch took the lead thanks to a beautiful strike from PSV Eindhoven striker Cody Gakpo in the 6th minute.

Ecuador then leveled in the 49th minute thanks to Enner Valencia, who scored his third goal of the tournament.

The South American had a goal as Brighton full-back Pervis Estupinan was disallowed at half-time and also hit the crossbar in injury time through Gonzalo Plata.
